Jesse Robert Short was born at Aberdare, Glamorganshire, Wales in 1887 the only known son of William Short and Margaret Elinor (Helena) Jones who were married at Abergavenny in 1885.

Jesse Robert migrated to the north east of England where he married, August 29th 1911, at the Registry Office Gateshead, Dinah Lowe with whom he had two daughters, born at Felling, Maggie Eleanor (Helena) February 9th 1912 and Mary Alice January 9th 1914.

He enlisted aged 27 years at Gateshead, October 16th 1914, assigned as Private 20786 to the Durham Light Infantry, however he was discharged, October 24th, under King’s Regulations 392 (iii), “not being likely to be an efficient soldier.” due to, “loss and decay of many teeth no proper means of mastication.” Determined to serve his country he presented himself at Newcastle-upon-Tyne in November 1914 and was accepted into the newly raised 26th (Tyneside Irish) Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers as Private 626. After initial training near home the battalion joined 103rd Brigade, 34th Division at Ripon in June 1915 and after further training they moved to Salisbury Plain in late August for final training. They proceeded to France in January 1916, where the Division concentrated at La Crosse, east of St Omer. Private Short rose through the ranks to Lance Corporal and was also transferred to the 24th Battalion. They were in action attached to the 103rd Brigade, 34th Division during the Battles of the Somme, including the capture of Scots and Sausage Redoubts, the Battles of Bazentin Ridge and Pozieres Ridge. 103rd Brigade and the Divisional Pioneers also saw action during the Battle of Flers-Courcelette. In 1917 they fought in the First and Second Battles of the Scarpe and the the Battle of Arleux during the Arras Offensive.

The circumstances surrounding the death of Lance Corporal Short are documented by the son of a serving New Zealand soldier Gunner A. J. Healy, belonging to No.27 Base Depot and takes place at the Etaples training depot in September 1917.

Relations between personnel and authorities at the camp had deteriorated and came to a head after the arrest of Gunner Healy, he and others had bypassed the police pickets patrolling the bridges that gave access to La Touquet, which were out of bounds to enlisted men, apprehended and put in a lock up, charged with desertion. The news spread and an angry crowd of men gathered heading towards town and would not disperse even when told Gunner Healy had been released. The arrival of military police only made matters worse, suddenly the sound of gunshots was heard. Private H. Reeve had fired into the crowd killing Corporal W. B. Wood, 4th Battalion Gordon Highlanders and injuring a French woman. Over the following days measures were taken to prevent the men from reaching the town and the Base Commandant requested reinforcements, meanwhile the demonstrations gathered pace. Wednesday September 12th 1917, in spite of orders confining them to camp, over 1,000 men broke out and marched through the town only to be confronted by the men of the Honourable Artillery Company who had arrived armed with wooden staves and supported by the Machine Gun Corps. The threat worked as only 300 men broke camp and were arrested at Etaples.

Many men were charged with various military offences, Lance Corporal Short was accused of attempted mutiny and found guilty of encouraging his men to put down their weapons and attack Captain E. F. Wilkinson of the West Yorkshire Regiment. Three soldiers received 10 years penal servitude, a further 10 were jailed for up to a year with hard labour, 33 were sentenced to between 30-90 days field punishment and others fined or reduced in rank. Lance Corporal 26/262 J. R. Short Northumberland Fusiliers for his part was sentenced to death and executed by firing squad, October 4th 1917 at Boulogne. He was buried at Boulogne Eastern Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France, grave VIII. I. 43. Due to the nature of the sandy soil the gravestones are laid flat. Lance Corporal Short was 30 years old.

His widow Dinah received all monies due to him, a pension for herself and her children and his awards of the British War Medal and Victory Medal sent to her at their home address of 11, Parkinson Street, Felling, Gateshead, County Durham. She commissioned an additional inscription to be added to his headstone costing 16 shillings 11 pence, it reads, “Duty Called And He Went Forward-Ever Remembered By His Wife And Children.”
