On the Ploegsteert Memorial is the name of 8956 Private Peter Dixon, serving with the 2nd Battalion (106th Foot), Durham Light Infantry who died 20/10/1914.

Peter Dixon was born on the 4th September 1884 at Felling, Durham, the youngest son of Ralph Dixon, a Labourer, and his wife, Mary Ann, daughter of Patrick Mitchell.

He was educated at St John's Catholic School at Felling. He had enlisted on the 16th September 1904 and served three years with the colours, plus the reserve.

Peter was married at Felling to Mary Ann (2 Welford's Buildings, Gateshead), daughter of Isaac Eglon. They had two sons, Ralph, born 7th July 1909 and Peter, born 7th January 1912.

When in the reserves he was employed as a River Wherry Worker at Gateshead. Peter was called up on mobilisation on the 5th August 1914, and was sent to France on the 8th September 1914.

He was killed in action on the 20th October 1914.

On the 20th October, the German Army launched an all out attack on the British Front from Ypres to Armentiere, the 2nd DLI were ordered forward to La Vallee. The Germans employed all of the 25th Reserve Division and the majority of the XIII Corps to break through the British lines. The 2nd DLI took heavy casualties and were forced to withdraw.
