Bainbridge, Jas., Pte., 1915

In Cite Bonjean Military Cemetery, Armentieres, France, is the Commonwealth War Grave of G/2243 Private James Bainbridge serving with the Durham Light Infantry who died 28/08/1915.

Pauline Priano has submitted the following:-

James Bainbridge was the second of 4 sons along with 2 daughters, 1 child deceased, born to John Bainbridge (1870) native of Gilesgate, Durham and Elizabeth Robinson (1870) of Houghton-le-Spring where the couple were married in 1889. Their eldest child Gilbert was born whilst they were living at 8, Lauton Street, West Herrington, County Durham where John was employed as a coal miner. They moved to 3, Ridley Street, Heworth in 1899 and by 1911 were living at 17 Havelock Street, James (17) was a labourer at the colliery working underground as did his brother John Edward (16), a breaker, Gilbert (20) was a stock keeper at the Co-op store.

James married in 1912 at Gateshead, Eliza Foster, September 12th 1912 she gave birth to a son John Henry.

He enlisted on the outbreak of war at Gateshead in 1914 assigned as Private G/2243 1st/9th Battalion Durham Light Infantry Machine Gun Section. He served with the regiment on the Western Front and died August 28th 1915 and interred at Cite Bonjean Military Cemetery, Armentieres, France, grave IX. C. 36.

His widow Eliza of 8, Alexandra Terrace, Felling, County Durham received all monies due to him, a pension and his awards of the 1915 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal. She may have remarried in 1922 either to David Sarginson or Hugh Williams.

His death was announced in Heslop's Weekly Advertiser 10/9/1915:

Killed in Action
Private James Bainbridge, 9th D.L.I., Machine Gun Section, in France of 28th August. Husband of Eliza Bainbridge, of 8 Alexandra Terrace, Felling, and second son of John and the late Elizabeth Bainbridge, of 17 Havelock St., Felling.

James Bainbridge is remembered at Heworth on H92.03
