John Taylor and Ann Norman have submitted the following:
John Albert Stephenson was born in Springwell, in about 1894, the son of Joseph and Jane Stephenson. He was known by his middle name, Albert, which is how he is remembered on the memorial. In 1911 he was employed as a miner-braker, while several of his brothers were also miners. His father and eldest brother, William, were employed as cartmen. The family lived at 8, Fourth Street, Heworth Colliery. In 1917 his parents lived at 27 Thomas Street, Eighton Banks.
He served as a Private in 1st/9th Battalion, Durham Light Infantry, regimental number 270005. He was killed in action on the Western Front on 14th April 1917. At the time of his death he was the widower of the late Alice Stephenson.
