Newcastle Journal 01/07/1915 reports:-

Yesterday afternoon Private Edward Charlton Wilkinson, 37 of No.2 Dobson's Buildings Low Spennymoor and a member of the 6th D.L.I. camped at Heworth was found on the road at Northside Birtley with his throat cut and an open razor grasped in his right hand. Harold Oyston of Birtley who found him went for assistance but the man died before anything could be done for him. He leaves a widow and four children.
