In H.A.C. Cemetery, Ecoust-St. Mein is the Commonwealth War Grave of 25/1128 Private Michael Mulkern, serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers who died 23/03/1918.

Michael Mulcairn was born in Wrekenton 1885, the youngest of four sons of Thomas and Mary who were both born in Ireland. In the 1891 census the family name is spelled Mulkearn. Thomas was employed as a milk cow keeper and Michael’s eldest brother John was a coal miner. The family lived at 6 Victoria Square, Wrekenton. The name was spelled Mulcairn in the 1901 census when the family lived in Back Ship Lane, Wrekenton. In 1911 census Michael, was employed as a coal hewer and boarding with the Cullen family at 21 Ship Lane, Wrekenton. His surname is spelled Mulkerrin.

Michael served as a Private with 25th Battalion (Tyneside Irish), Northumberland Fusiliers, regimental number 25/1128. His military records all have his name as Michael Mulkern. He died on the Western Front on 23rd March 1918. He is buried in plot: VIII. C. 5 at the H. A. C. Cemetery, Ecoust-St. Mein, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France. This cemetery was originally begun during the war for men of the 2nd Battalion, Honourable Artillery Company, but was expanded after the Armistice with men from other Regiments, who were buried in smaller cemeteries in the local area. Michael is also remembered in Ireland’s Memorial Records 1914-1918.
