Bates, E.M., Pte., 1915

In Redoubt Cemetery, Helles is the Commonwealth War Grave of PO/272(S) Private Edward Musgrove Bates, serving with the Royal Marine Light Infantry who died 31/12/1915.

John Taylor and Ann Norman have submitted the following:

Edward Musgrove Bates, who was apparently known as Ned, was born on 3rd March 1895, in Windy Nook, the eldest of five children of James and Mary Bates. His father was employed as a coal miner and the family lived at 28 Eighton Terrace, Wrekenton.

Edward served as a Private with the 2nd Battalion, Royal Marines, number Po/272 (S). He was killed at Gallipoli on 31st December 1915 and is buried at Redoubt Cemetery, Helles, Gallipoli, Turkey.

He is remembered in Eighton Banks on E50.01 and E50.02
