Atkinson, J.G., Pte., 1916
On the Thiepval Memorial is the name of 18907 John Atkinson, serving with the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers who died 01/07/1916.

John Taylor and Ann Norman have submitted the following:

John G. Atkinson was born about 1892, the son of James and Elizabeth Atkinson of Walmer Terrace, Eighton Banks. His father was employed as a coal miner and after leaving school John a served an apprenticeship with the Co-op as a grocer. He had a younger adopted brother and an aunt and a lodger were also living with the family on the 1911 census.

He served as a Private with 11th Battalion, Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, regimental number 18907. He was killed in action in France on 1st July 1916. He is also remembered on Ireland’s Memorial Records 1914-1918, and with a photograph in the Gateshead War Honours Scrapbook, 1914-1920.

He is remembered in Eighton Banks on E50.01, E50.02 and E50.05
