John Ivers was born in Low Fell in about 1886. He was the eldest of a family of eleven. His parents were William and Mary Ann Ivers, and in 1911, they were living at 51 High Street, Wrekenton. John, his father, and his next two brothers, Edward and William, were all coal miners.
He served as a Private with 27th Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers, (Tyneside Irish) with the regimental number 27/1339. He was killed in action at the Battle of the Somme, on 1st July 1916. His name is on the Thiepval Monument.
John Ivers is remembered at Eighton Banks on E50.01E50.02
