Gibbons, J., Fireman, 1941
On Tower Hill Memorial is the name of Fireman and Trimmer John Gibbons, M.M., serving with the Merchant Navy on S.S. Rio Dorado who died 16/03/1941.

Rio Dorado SS was a British cargo steamer of 4.507grt which was sunk by gunfire from the German battleship Gneisenau on the 16th March 1942.

He was the father of John Gibbons who had died 6 months previously.

John Gibbons is remembered in Dunston Hill on D31.01 and on our List of Ships’ crews.
