Suggett, C.E., L/Cpl., 1917

In Cayeux Military Cemetery, France, is the Commonwealth War Grave of 16/1399 Lance Corporal Charles Edward Suggett, serving with the 13th Platoon, 'D' Company, 16th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers who died 06/04/1917.

Charles was born on the 31st October 1885, at 1 Diamond Street, West Auckland, Co Durham, baptised on the 26th November 1885 at Bishop Auckland, the eldest son of 4 children to Samuel, [born 1861, Gilesgate Moor], and Marie Suggett, [born 1862, Bishop Auckland], of 19, Clifford Terrace, Crawcrook, Ryton.

The children were Ethel, born 1897, Hannah, born 1884, [West Auckland], and Annie born 1881, [Houghton-le-Wear].

Charles was a Coal Miner as was his father working at the Clara Vale Coal Mine.

Charles married Phoebe Ann Bulman [nee Eltringham], born 7th April 1890, [daughter of Joseph and Isabella, born 16th December 1869], in 1914. She died on the 27th January 1974 at Leaside St Agnes Villas, Ryton.

They resided at 20, Moor View, Ryton, Co. Durham.

Charles died of his wounds at no 36 Casualty Clearing Station, [this was located at Heilly]. He was hit by the German Retaliatory barrage on his battalion's position near 'Savy Wood' by shrapnel and severely wounded.

Charles's widow Phoebe, remarried Henry F. William in 1927. In 1939 were residing at Ryton at Leaside, St Agnes Garden, Ryton.

When Phoebe died on the 27th January 1974 she left effects of £8161.

The third photo is of Savy Church after the Germans mined it in April 1917.

Durham. Husband of Phoebe A B Suggett (nee Eltringham) of 20 Moor View, Barmoor, West Ryton on Tyne, Co. Durham. Two sisters, Ethel, and Annie.

The Suggett family were for many years connected with the Centenary Methodist Church, Main Street, Crawcrook. Phoebe Suggett provided a beautiful brass plaque to remember her husband. The plaque hangs in the gallery of the Centenary Church. The father, Samuel Suggett, was prominent in the 1926 General Strike at a local level with the Clara Vale Miners Lodge. He and other Clara Vale Miners opposed the introduction of Blacklegs (those who wanted to work as others were on strike). Samuel along with his work mates were summoned to appear at Gateshead Magistrates Court under the Emergency Powers Act, for misdemeanours carried out within the area.

Shield Daily News Tuesday 18/01/1927, Samuel Sugget was fined £30 under the Coal Emergency Regulations.

Charles Edward Suggett is remembered in Clara Vale on C96.01 , in Crawcrook on C97.01 and in Ryton on R33.01 and in the Battalion History, page 144, 165 and 177
