In Dartmoor Cemetery Becordel-Becourt, Somme, France is the Commonwealth War Grave of 5716 Private James McCarty, serving with the East Yorkshire regiment who died 04/05/1916.

Pauline Priano has submitted the following:-

James McCarty born at Hebburn, County Durham in about 1890 married, in the district of Gateshead in 1913, Agnes Hall Gidney, also of Hebburn, born February 22nd 1892 and living in 1911 with her parents Clarence, and Agnes Gidney and brother Clarence Jnr. at 58 Coxon Street, Bill Quay, near Heworth, County Durham. His wife gave birth to a daughter Agnes Margaret Gidney McCarty, January 11th 1914, district of South Shields.

James McCarty enlisted at Jarrow, as Private 5716 assigned to the 3rd (Reserve) Battalion, East Yorkshire Regiment. It was not until 1916 that he was drafted to France as part of the British Expeditionary Force and transferred to the 1st Battalion which had been fighting on the Western Front since 1914 as part of the 18th Brigade, 6th Division but now transferred to the 64th Brigade, 21st Division. In spring 1916 the Division was preparing for its participation during the Battles of the Somme where they were due to attack at Albert.

Private 5716 James McCarty East Yorkshire Regiment was killed during day to day trench warfare May 4th 1916, his body interred at Dartmoor Cemetery Becordel-Becourt, 2.5 kilometres south east of Albert, Somme, France, grave I. C. 31., he was 26 years old.

His widow Agnes received all monies due to him, a pension for herself and their daughter and his awards of the British War Medal and Victory Medal, sent to her at her parent's home, 58, Coxon Street, Bill Quay.

Agnes remarried in 1927 to widower Robert Jeffries Gladstone Fulthorpe born 1889 at Gateshead with whom she had a daughter Iris in 1929. Robert Fulthorpe died January 22nd 1955 at Bensham Hospital, Gateshead leaving to his wife probate in the sum of £910 6 shillings 7 pence. Agnes Fulthorpe-McCarty nee Gidney died in the district of Gateshead, October 1st 1987, aged 95 years.

James and Agnes’s daughter married John A. Lisle at Gateshead in 1944. Agnes Margaret Gidney Lisle nee McCarty living at 418, Armstrong Road, Newcastle-upon-Tyne died October 21st 1988 leaving probate of unknown sum to person or persons unspecified.

His death was reported in Heslop's Local Advertiser 26/05/1916

"Private James McCarty, East Yorks, killed in action on May 4th, aged 24 years. Husband of Agnes McCarty, 58 Coxon Street, Bill Quay."

He is remembered at Heworth on H92.03
