WITTON PARK

Murrow, J.W., Pte., 1914-18
A booklet about Witton Park carries the following undated transcript from a newspaper:

"Hero's Welcome.

The death yesterday of Mr. John William Murrow, of Woodside, Witton Park, recalls to older residents of Woodside the outstanding welcome he received the morning following Armistice Day in 1918.

He served in the DLI and happened to be coming home on leave that morning. Woodside and Witton Park residents assembled at Etherley Station to give a welcome to whichever soldier happened to be on the first early morning train and it turned out to be Mr. Murrow.

He was given a tumultuous welcome reception and with an improvised band was feted all the way to his home, half a mile away, all the residents following and cheering, with banners and flags flying.

It was a real hero's welcome home.
