Creegan, P., Spr., 1917

In Vlamertinghe Military Cemetery, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium is the Commonwealth War Grave of 102450 Sapper Patrick Creegan serving with the 177th Tunnelling Company Royal Engineers who died 03/06/1917.

Patrick known as Paddy Creegan was born in 1887 the second son of Bridget and Peter Creegan at Witton Park. In 1901 the family recorded as Crugan were living at Thompson Street Witton Park. In 1906 Peter died.

In 1911 the family were at Stanley near Crook at 7 Stanley Terrace. Living in the four roomed house was widowed mother Bridget, John (30 Hewer), Patrick (24 Hewer), Frank, (22 Putter) Thomas (20 Putter) and Dennis (reads Dinnis Boot repairer 18) , brother in law Joseph Varty (Hewer 27), sister Catherine Varty (26) and Thomas Albert Varty nephew (4 months)

Patrick enlisted at London, Middlesex and joined the Royal Engineers. He was part of the 177th Tunnelling Company. He embarked for France June 10th 1915.

Patrick was killed June 3rd 1917 and was buried at Vlamertinghe Military Cemetery.

He was awarded the 1915 Star, the British War Medal, the Victory Medal.

His sister Catherine Varty was his sole legatee.

Bridget and son Dennis were at Thompson Street Witton Park in 1930. Bridget Creegan died in 1934.

Creegan is spelt Greegan, Crugan and also as Creengan.

Patrick Creegan is remembered at Witton Park on W125.04, as Greegan at Witton Park on W125.02 and at Stanley Crook on S147.01

He is also listed as an employee of Pease and Partners at Bowden Close (Helmington Row) in H138.02 (Darlington D40.039)
