Arthur was the son of Daniel John and Jane Sams and was born in 1897 at Toft Hill. In 1911 the family are at Toft Hill and Arthur aged 14 is a driver coal miner.
Arthur enlisted at Bishop Auckland he joined the Durham Light Infantry (3678), was transferred to the North Lancs Regiment (36530) and then finally the Royal Irish Regiment. Arthur went to France and died 06/09/1916.
Arthur Sams is remembered at High Etherley on H127.01 and H127.02
