L/Sgt George Dixon 15th Battalion DLI A Company

In Cambrin Churchyard Extension is the Commonwealth War Grave of 14508 Lance Sergeant George Dixon, serving with the 15th Battalion, 'A' Company, Durham Light Infantry who died 18/10/1916.

Son of William and Elizabeth Dixon; husband of Ruth E. Dixon, of 2, Escomb Bank, Escomb, Bishop Auckland, Co. Durham. Native of Escomb.

He joined the NER on May 19th 1914 and was employed as a brush-hand in the Engineer's Department at Bishop Auckland.

He enlisted in September 1914. He had the reputation in his regiment of being a thoroughly capable and trustworthy man. A card addressed to him, and bearing the signature of the Major-General commanding his Division, reads:- Your Commanding Officer and Brigade Commander have informed me that you distinguished yourself in the field on September 16th 1916. I congratulate you on your fine work.

A letter received from his officer by Mrs Dixon states that Sergeant Dixon could always be relied on in a tight corner, and that his cool bearing and cheerfulness often inspired the men under him. "Under the most adverse circumstances he had always a smile and a joke for his men, and encouraging them on many a weary march by his singing and merriment."

He was killed in action on the 18th October 1916. Age 31.
