Sgt. Stephenson was killed when Avro Lancaster I W4159 WS-Y of 9 Sqn was lost on a mission to Duisburg. The Lancaster was shot down by a Luftwaffe night-fighter flown by Oblt. Ludwig Becker, of II./NJG1, and crashed at 19.23 hours near Hackfort, in Gelderland, with the loss of all seven crew members.
