Crowe, W., St.Sgt., 1923

Auckland & County Chronicle 29/3/1923

The Auckland and County Chronicle 29/03/1923 carries the following:

We regret to record the death which took place at his residence, 9 Bell Street, Bishop Auckland, on Tuesday, of ex-Staff-Sergeant Walter Crowe, after an illness of nearly two years' duration. Mr. Crowe was a native of York. He served four years during the war and won the D.C.M. He was demobbed in 1919, and resumed his work as a colliery mason at St.Helen's Colliery, having previously worked at Leasingthorne. Two years ago he contracted an incurable disease, and although every effort was strained by the War Pensions Committee to secure him a pension it was unsuccessful. Mr. Crowe rendered valuable service to the community as hon. secretary of the Town War Memorial Committee, and his death is regretted by a large circle of townspeople. The funeral will take place on Saturday.
