Winter, J., Pte., 1918
On Pozieres Memorial is the name of 248006 Private Joseph Winter serving with 1st/8th Durham Light Infantry who died 27/03/1918.

Brenda McMahon has submitted the following:-

Joseph was born to parents Stephen (coal hewer) and Isabella (nee Smith) at Brandon, County Durham in 1897. His siblings were Hannah, George and John.

After enlisting into the army at Durham he went off to war but was unfortunately killed in action 27 March 1918 aged 31 years.

He is commemorated on Pozieres Memorial which relates to the period of crisis in March and April 1918 when the Allied Fifth Army was driven back by overwhelming numbers across the former Somme battlefields and the months that followed before the Advance to Victory, which began on 8th August 1918. The Durham Light Infantry has approximately 600 on the memorial. (extract from CWGC website)

He was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
