In Varennes Military Cemetery, Somme, France, is the Commonwealth War Grave of 61572 Sapper John Brown serving with the Special Section Special Brigade Royal Engineers who died 29/10/1916.

Too dearly loved to be forgotten

Husband of Kate Brown, of 48, Allerton Street, Burley, Leeds.

John Brown was born at Coundon in 1887. He was the son of Richard and Jane Ann Brown.

In 1911 John was a Colliery Fitter living with his parents and siblings at 74 William Street Auckland Park, Coundon Grange.

He married Kate Hodgson in Leeds in 1912.

In 1914 the family now joined by Richard born 1913 were living at 29 William Street, Auckland Park.

John enlisted at Bishop Auckland on December 29th 1914 and joined the Royal Engineers.

He died of gas poisoning October 29th 1916.

Medals: 1915 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal

Kate returned to her native Leeds after John's death.
