The Sunderland Echo 20/08/1940 reports:-

HOME GUARD'S DEATH Death from heart failure brought on by exercise and training on the rifle range as a member of the Home Guard was the verdict returned by Coroner W Patterson at an inquest in Whitburn last night on Alexander Charles Mooney (66) of School Avenue, West Rainton It was stated that after firing his course at the range on Sunday morning. Mooney ran to catch a bus. but after asking a friend whether he had hit the target he collapsed and died
