In West Rainton (St. Mary) Churchyard is the Commonwealth War Grave with a private headstone of 14658466 SapperArthur Herdman serving with the Royal Engineers who died 11/01/1944.

The headstone reads:-

who died 28th January 1928 aged 29 years
Also Thomas Herdman
who died 27th Dec. 1940 aged 72 years
Also Margaret Herdman
who died 20th June 1944 aged 77 years
Also their son Arthur
beloved husband of
Eva Herdman
who died whilst serving in H.M. Forces
11th Jan. 1944 aged 39 years
Also their son
Thomas Phillips Herdman
who died 28th May 1968 aged 65 years

The Newcastle Journal 17/01/1944 reports:-

WYLAM FUNERAL Home Guards, Boys’ Brigade and military were present Wylam Methodist Church Saturday at the service which preceded the Interment at West Ralnton of Private Arthur Herdman. R.E.. husband of Mrs. Herdman, Woodcraft Road, Wylam.

Arthur Herdman is remembered at Wylam on W73.02 and W73.06
