WEST RAINTON

Poole, F.C., Maj.Gen., 1914-18 (1936)
The Newcastle Chronicle 30/11/1940 contains the following adapted report about the unveiling of a stained glass window in St. Mary's Church West Rainton:

"The late Major General Sir Frederick Cuthbert Poole was the 5th son of the late Rev. R.H. Poole, Rector of Rainton from 1859 to 1875.

General Poole early in life left the parish to be a soldier.

An old boy of Durham School, he entered the Army through Woolwich, served in India, South Africa and Nigeria, and retired a few months before the Great War, but was recalled and afterwards served with distinction in France, Russia and elsewhere."

He had two brothers who had died and were commemorated in St.Mary's Church. His only surviving brother was Canon R.H.J. Poole, Vicar of Christ Church, West Hartlepool.

Frederick Cuthbert Poole is remembered in West Rainton on W113.06 and in Durham in D47.057 page 220.
