Jones, R.W., Bdr., 1917
In Godewaersvelde British Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of 72964 Bombardier Richard William Jones serving with the 12th Battery, 35th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery who died 20/10/1917.

Brenda McMahon has submitted the following:-

Richard was born in 1895 at Quarrington Hill Durham. He was the son of John and Mary Jones of Heugh Hall, Coxhoe.

He married his sweetheart, Elizabeth Ann Newton in 1913 who after his death married Hugh Wilkinson in 1919 at Gateshead.

Richard joined the Royal Field Artillery as a driver. He was later promoted.

He died of wounds (gas) which he came into contact with on October 17th 1917 and died only a few days later.

An inscription was added to his headstone which reads :- Death Divides But Memory Clings

Godewaersvelde is a village near the Belgian border, about 16 kilometres south-west of Ieper (in Belgium), and is half-way between Poperinge (in Belgium) and Hazebrouck (in France). The British Cemetery is a little east of the village.

Medals :- 1915 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal.
