Scott, W.P., L/Cpl., 1917
On Tyne Cot Memorial is the name of 202786 Lance Corporal Private William Percival Scott serving with 20th Battalion Durham Light Infantry who died 21/09/1917.

William was born at Tursdale in 1897 the son of William and Mary Jane. They had 6 children together although one died. His siblings were Mary Ann, J., R., Isabella, Thomas and Catherine.

In 1901 William senior was working the coalminer hewer.

By 1911 William senior had been promoted to deputy overman whilst his son, William was a driver at the mine at age 14. The family lived at 57 Ramsay Street, Tursdale Colliery.

William P. originally served with 1/5 Battalion Durham Light Infantry as number 3953, later he was transferred to the 1/6th battalion as number 202786 then eventually served with 1/20th D.L.I.

He was promoted to Lance Corporal. He was killed in action on September 21st 1917 in Belgium.

His monies due to him were allocated to his father. They amounted to £1.9s.1d with a war gratuity of £9.0.0d added later.

Around the eastern boundary of Tyne Cot Cemetery near the town of Ieper in Belgium stands the Tyne Cot Memorial. It bears the names of some 35,000 men of the British and New Zealand forces who have no known grave, nearly all of whom died between August 1917 and November 1918. This area on the Western Front was the scene of the Third Battle of Ypres. Also known as the Battle of Passchendaele, it was one of the major battles of the First World War.
