Groves, G.E., AC1, 1940

On the Runnymede Memorial is the name of 569713 Aircraftman 1st Class George Edward Groves, serving with the Royal Air Force who died 17/06/1940.

Simon Glancey has submitted the following:

AC1 Groves was killed aboard the troopship R.M.S. Lancastria, 145943, which was sunk with huge loss of life when it was bombed off St. Nazaire. The ship was evacuating Allied personnel from France when it was tracked by the Luftwaffe, and it sank with the death toll estimated to be between 3,000 and 5,800.

George Edward Groves is remembered in Quebec on Q2.07 in Durham on D47.025
