In St.Mary’s Churchyard is a family headstone for Stephenson which includes:

who fell in action in France
Sept. 28th 1915.

Fred Stephenson
5th Battalion, Durham Light Infantry
Fred lived at the West Hetton Inn and was employed in the local coal industry. Fred entered France on 17th April 1915. He died of the wounds he sustained in battle and passed away on 29th September 1915. He lies at rest in Bailleul Community Cemetery near the French Belgian border.
