McVean, L.Cpl., awarded M.M. 1919
The Auckland and County Chronicle 13/03/1919 reports:

"Heroism Recognised.
A very enjoyable time was spent in the St.Agatha's Mission Hall, Brandon, on Wednesday last week, on the occasion of a concert and social promoted by the Brandon Institute A.F.C. in honour of the gaining of the Military Medal by Lance-Corpl. J. McVean, 12th Durham Light Infantry, one of their late officials and a life-long devotee of the game. The distinction was gained for conspicuous gallantry on the Italian front during the crossing of the River Piave by his Lewis gun section. One of the guns got hopelessly submerged, and despite heroic efforts by Corpl. McVean to save it, the strong current swept it away. However, he covered the opposition by means of another Lewis gun until the objective was attained, and therefore was well worthy of the honour done to him as a slight recognition of his heroism. He was presented with a gold keyless watch, suitably inscribed, and in response made a few well-chosen remarks by way of thanks."
