He joined Pioneer Corps in 1939. Having survived the Dunkirk evacuation, he served with the First Army in North Africa. He died July 22nd 1943 age 34, and is buried at Bone War Cemetery, Annaba, Algeria. He was the son of Samuel and Dorothy Gibbs and husband of Jane Gibbs, of Queen St, New Brancepeth, Co Durham.
