The Auckland and County Gazette 13/03/1919 reports:
"The many friends of Mr. H. McDermott, chairman of the Brandon Workmen's Club, will regret to learn that his eldest son, Pte. E. McDermott, of the 18th D.L.I., has been reported missing since last April. "Eddie"" was a bright, cheerful lad, and any information regarding his fate will be welcomed both by his parents and his wife."
