In Brancepeth (St. Brandon) Churchyard is the Commonwealth War Grave with a private headstone of 4457494 Corporal Percival Thomas Taylor serving with the Durham Light Infantry who died 10/04/1942

Son of Percival Thomas Taylor and Ethel Taylor; husband of Hilda Muriel Taylor, of Stokenham, Devon. Professional footballer for Preston North End.

The headstone reads:-

Thomas Taylor
Durham Light Infantry
died on active service
10th April 1942
aged 22 years

Collision when Motor-Cycling

Middlesbrough F.C. Guest Player Killed

The Middlesbrough F.C. was informed on Saturday that Corpl. P.T. Taylor, the young Preston North End Forward who scored three goals against Bradford for Middlesbrough a week earlier had been killed the previous night as the result of his motor cycle colliding with a heavy vehicle.

Taylor had declined an invitation to appear for Middlesbrough against Newcastle United on Saturday in order to play for his regiment in an Army match in Durham County. He was a native of Sunderland.

The Sunderland Echo 13/04/1942 reports:-

Tragic Death of Preston Forward

Mr W. Carr at a Durham inquest today returned a verdict of accidental death in the case of Corporal Percival Thomas Taylor (23) an Army physical training instructor of 22, Lime Street Sunderland who in civilian life was a professional footballer playing for Preston North End.

Percival Thomas Taylor is not remembered on a local War Memorial in Sunderland.

He is remembered in The DLI Book of Remembrance page 18
