Atkinson, G.A., F/Sgt., 1943
On the Runnymede Memorial is the name of 1485104 Flight Sergeant George Addison Atkinson, serving with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, who died 23/11/1943.

Simon Glancey has submitted the following:

Flight Sgt Atkinson was the pilot of Short Stirling III EF445 BU-J of 214 Squadron, which was lost on a mission to Berlin. The Stirling was hit by flak over Hanover, and suffered severe icing to the airframe and further damage after being engaged by a Luftwaffe FW-190 fighter. The Stirling ditched in the North Sea at 00.34. Of the seven crew, five were rescued, but Sgt Atkinson, and the rear gunner, were lost.

George Addison Atkinson is remembered in Aykley Heads on A41.02, at Wheatley Hill on W114.07 and W114.09 and at Wingate W121.06
