In Wingate (Deaf Hill) Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of 563257 Sergeant Robert Frederick Carter, serving with the Royal Air Force, who died 17/04/1940.

The Northern Echo 22/04/1940 reports:

The funeral took place yesterday at Deaf Hill Cemetery of Sergt. Pilot Robert Frederick Carter, aged 27 years, son of Mrs C. Carter and the late Frank Carter of Coronation Terrace Deaf Hill, Trimdon Station. he joined the RAF ten years ago. The Rev. G.H. Spiller officiated at the funeral.

Sgt. Carter was serving with 144 Squadron. He was a crew member of Hampden I L4163 PL- which took off from Hemswell on Operation Gardening but crashed into a cottage killing all four crew.
