Whitelock, A.B., Sgt., 1972
The Durham Chronicle 01/09/1972 carries the following:-

Trimdon Village Soldier killed by Sniper.

The tragic death of a Trimdon Village soldier Sergeant Arthur Bainbridge Whitelock aged 24 killed by a sniper's bullet while on patrol in Londonderry caused grieving among people in the Trimdons.

He had only a few days to go to end his third tour of duty.

Sergeant Whitelock who was the son of Mr and Mrs George Whitelock of Jasmine Cottage Trimdon Village was serving with the 2nd Battalion Light Infantry. He enlisted in the Army six years ago after working with Trimdon Bakeries and served on a six month tour as part of a United Nations peace-keeping force in Cyprus.

Sergeant Whitelock was to have been posted to Shrewsbury as a weapon training instructor this week.

He leaves a wife and 2 and a half year old daughter.

Mrs Whitelock has been staying at the home of her widowed mother Mrs E. Lyth of Ellesmere Port, Cheshire.

Yesterday he was given a full military funeral at Hooton Parish church, Wirral, Cheshire, where he was married four years ago.

Sergeant Whitelock's father is a public service bus driver for Trimdon Motor Services Co. Ltd.

He is remembered at Trimdon Village on T58.01 T58.04 and T58.07
