In Spennymoor Cemetery is a family headstone which reads:-
In loving memory of
John
the beloved husband of Elizabeth Gowland
of Middlestone Moor
who died Sept. 21st 1915
aged 60 years
Also Ernest
son of the above
who died of dysentery at Trelon
while a prisoner of war Sept. 11th 1918
aged 34 years
Until the day dawns
Ernest is not remembered on a local War Memorial.
He is remembered in The DLI Book of Remembrance page 240
