Mawson, J.R.L., A/Smn., 1916
In Etaples Military Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of KX/392 Able Seaman John Robert Laidlaw Mawson, serving with the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve who died 27/12/1916.

Colin Boyd has supplied the following:

John was born on 7th February 1894. He was working as a miner living with his father, Fred at 35, Busty Terrace, Shildon, Co. Durham when he enlisted in the Northumberland Fusiliers on 2nd September 1914.

He transferred to the RNVR on 7th September 1914 and joined the Hood Battalion on 9th September 1914 where he served until critically wounded on 13th November 1916. John died in the 20th General Hospital in France from the effects of gun shot wounds to the abdomen and right knee on 27th December 1916.

John must have married during his service as his next of kin was changed to his wife E.A. of 17, Vaughan Street, Shildon, later of Darlington.

John Robert Laidlaw Mawson is remembered in Shildon on S122.02 and S122.19
