In New Shildon (All Saints) Churchyard is the Commonwealth War Grave with a private headstone of 41094 Pilot Officer James Cameron Young, serving with the Royal Air Force, who died 30/05/1940.

The headstone reads:-

Treasured memories of
Pilot Officer
James Cameron Young
B.A. son of the late
Cpl. J.C. and S.E. Young
Killed after completing
a war operation over France
May 30th 1940 aged 25 years

Love's last tribute

Simon Glancey has submitted the following:

P/O Young was killed when Vickers Wellington 1c P9241 of 99 Sqn was lost returning from a mission to St. Omer. The Wellington's crew were ordered to abandoned the aircraft by P/O Young, the pilot, after it had run short of fuel. He then attempted to force-land the aircraft, but was killed trying to do so. The five other crewman landed safely.

He is remembered in Shildon on S122.02 and in Bishop Auckland on B140.01
