Eden, W.N., Midshipman, 1916
On Plymouth Naval Memorial is the name of Midshipman William Nicholas Eden serving in the Royal Navy on H.M.S. Indefatigable who died 31/05/1916.

Brenda McMahon has submitted the following:-

William Nicholas was born on March 14th 1900 the son of Sir William Eden and Lady Sybil Frances (nee Grey) of Windlestone Hall, Ferryhill. The couple married on July 20th 1886 at St Pauls, London and went on to have six children although sadly one died. They were Elfrida, John, Timothy, Robert Anthony and William Nicholas. Another son, Simon was born and died in 1904.

1901 There is no trace of the family except for John (Jack) who was a boarder at school at Walton, Suffolk. It transpires that there had been a financial matter to be dealt with so Sir William sent his entire family and entourage to Europe which possibly explains why, other than Jack, there is no trace of the family on the census.

1911 William aged 11 was boarding at a house at Bexhill, Surrey along with several others visitors of whom he was the youngest.

William was educated at Sandroyd Preparatory School then at the Royal Naval Colleges at Osborne, Isle of Wight and Dartmouth, Devon. Reports from Osborne recorded that he had "lots of abilities but not much application and lacks ginger and general interest in things that are going on." He hated Osborne. In April 1914, there was a formal notice that unless Nicholas’s record improved drastically he would be removed. Information from Gaunless Valley WW1

On January 1st 1916 to William's delight he was assigned as a midshipman to HMS Indefatigible a Royal Navy battle cruiser. Admiral Beatty in his letters to Lady Eden forecast, "a distinguished career in a very distinguished if somewhat arduous Service."

William took part in the Battle of Jutland off the coast of Denmark in May 1916. His ship was hit early in the sea action by shells from the German battle cruiser Von Der Tann, captained by Rear Admiral Fritz von Hipper. It lurched out of line to starboard only to be struck squarely by a second salvo. This resulted in explosions aboard ship. The Indefatigible was wreathed in smoke but when it cleared it was cleared the ship was sinking by the astern and listing over to port. She sank in seconds at 16.03pm on May 31st 1916. From a crew of 1019 only two survived. William Nicholas Eden was aged 16 years 78 days.

His father had died at the Cavendish Hotel in London on February 20th 1915 leaving an estate valued at £71,570 3s 3d. The title should have passed to his oldest son, Jack, but he had been killed in action in 1914 so the next in line was Timothy Eden. Timothy was in Germany at the outbreak of hostilities. He was perfecting his language skills with the intention of joining the Diplomatic Service. He was later held at a civilian detention camp at Ruhlegen, Germany and was repatriated in 1916.

Another brother who fought in the Great War was Robert Anthony Eden (known as Anthony). He received his commission with the 21st (Yeoman Rifles) King’s Royal Rifle Corps and arrived in France in 1916. He won the Military Cross at the Battle of the Somme. He survived the war and later entered politics where he advanced to the position of Foreign Secretary then later became Prime Minister between 1955-1957.

His mother, Lady Sybil offered Windlestone Hall for use as a VAD Hospital for wounded soldiers for which service she was later awarded the OBE.

William Nicholas Eden is remembered at Kirk Merrington on K26.01 and at Sandroyd School, Wiltshire
