In Pietermaritzburg (Fort Napier) Cemetery, South Africa, is the Commonwealth War Grave of 2657570 Guardsman Gilbert Dunn serving with the Coldstream Guards who died 25/06/1942.

Brenda McMahon has submitted the following:-

Gilbert was born in 1914 in the Auckland District the son of John William and Jane (nee Summerson).

He originally enlisted in the Foot Guards but later transferred to the Coldstream Guards.

There is an entry that relates to Gilbert’s service number indicating he could have been serving before WW2 broke out. His service suggests he was with the Guards between 1934-36.

He fought at various locations in the middle east including Palestine but eventually ended up in South Africa.

Gilbert died of pulmonary tuberculosis at Oribi Hospital, Pietermaritzburg camp, Natal.

He is buried at the cemetery located at Kwazulu Natal, South Africa.

The inscription on his headstone reads:-He laid down his life for his friends Ever in the thoughts of his mother and family.

Mentioned on the Army Roll of Honour 1939-45.
