Maughan, P., Pte., 1918
In Heath Cemetery, Harbonnieres, Somme, France, is the Commonwealth War Grave of 19266 Private Peter Maughan, serving with the East Yorkshire Regiment who died 12/08/1918.

Brenda Mcmahon has submitted the following:-

Peter, the son of Peter and Mary Jane Maughan, was born at Leasingthorne in 1887. His siblings were brother John Robert (1882), and sister Mary Ann (1883).

In 1911 the family were living at 5 Oak Terrace Leasingthorne. Peter junior was a shift worker at the local colliery. Only his brother Willie age 9 and sister Elizabeth Jane aged 20 years were living at home.

In 1912 Peter married Margaret Hannah Henderson and they went on to have three children - Alfred, 10th November 1912, Doris, 5th December 1914 and Olive, 6th February 1919.

Peter enlisted at Ferryhill, by this time he was living at Kirk Merrington. After training he went to France 7th October 1915.

Peter was killed in action 12th of August 1918.

Recipient of the 1915 Star, the Victory Medal and British War Medal.

Margaret Hannah and the children were living at 4 Mission Row and then 24 Front Street Kirk Merrington.

Margaret Hannah did not remarry and in 1939 she was living at 6 Crowther Place Spennymoor.
