John, usually known as Jack, was born about 1893. No details of his parents can be found although his Pension Records say that Mrs Dunn of 9 Coronation Terrace Kirk Merrington was his adopted mother.
Jack originally served as number 16107 with the 6th Yorkshire Regiment where he served in the Balkans. Later he was transferred to the 1st East Yorkshires as number 29975.
He was recorded as missing on the War Office Daily List No 5599 on June 29th 1918. It was later reported that he died on October 19th 1918 whilst being held as a prisoner of war.
