In Duncombe Cemetery Ferryhill is a family headstone which reads:-

In
loving memory of

Phillip Aaron
Grundy
dearly loved son
brother and uncle
died 9th September 1991
aged 22 years
Due to accident in Germany

Our hearts are broken
R.I.P.

The Newcastle Evening Chronicle 12/09/1991 reports:-

Trooper Phillip Grundy, a 22-year-old Co Durham soldier of the Scots Dragoon Guards, was killed when the car he was travelling in left the Hanover-Hamburg motorway and crashed into a drainage ditch in Northern Germany. Another soldier was killed and two seriously injured, but no other vehicle was involved.

Brothers Phillip and Andrew are buried side by side in Ferryhill Cemetery.
