In Stanley New cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave with a private headstone of 4458197 Private Thomas Steel serving with the Durham Light Infantry who died 28/06/1940.

The headstone reads:-

In loving memory of
A dear husband and father
William Weaver Steel
Died 2nd April 1977 Aged 80 years
Also Ann Steel a dear wife and mother
Died 9th March 1986 aged 84 years

and son Pte. Thomas Steel D.L.I.
died 28th June 1940 aged 21 years
Also grandson Kevin
Died 7th April 1960 aged 6½ years
