Whisker, R.V., Pte., 1921

Stanley St. Andrew's Churchyard

In St. Andrew’s Churchyard is the Commonwealth War Grave with a private headstone of 203369 Private Roland Valentine Whisker serving with the 5th Reserve Battalion Durham Light Infantry who died 30/06/1921.

The headstone reads:-

In loving memory of
Roland Valentine
the beloved son of
Isabelle and the late
John Whisker
who departed this life
June 30th 1921 aged 24 years

Also Samuel
Son of the above
Who departed this life
Sep 23rd 1929 aged 36 years
As a result of injuries
Received in the Great War.

Dorothy Hall submits the following information:-

Robert was the son of John and Isabella Whisker. In 1911 they was living at 8 Shafto Terrace, Shield Row, Stanley and Robert (14) was a driver in a local colliery.

He had enlisted on 1st September 1915 and was awarded a Silver War badge in October 1917. He had been discharged 28th September 1917.

His brother Samuel also served in the War and died as a result of war injuries.

Neither brother is remembered on a local War Memorial.
