Leadgate War Memorial Dedication

In Martinsart British Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of 19/863 Private Thomas William Parkin serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers who died 01/06/1918.

Tom and Cynthia Parkin have submitted the following:-

My grandfather Thomas William Parkin was born at Bitchburn near Howden le Wear County Durham in 1887. He was the fourth son of John (born 1836 Tow Law) and Maria nee Howe (born Northallerton 1852). His siblings included Adam born 1873, Eve born 1878, John George born 1880, Joseph born 1884, Charles born 1890 and Sarah Jane born 1893.

After spending many years working in the mines of the Bitchburn area, the family moved to Leadgate.

In 1911 they were living at Durham Road Leadgate. John was retired and Thomas William aged 24 was working as a Coal Miner.

In 1913 Thomas William married Margaret Nevison. The couple had at least two children Thomas born 1913 and Elsie born 1915.

He enlisted and joined the Northumberland Fusiliers.

Thomas William Parkin was killed on 1st June 1918 and is buried in Martinsart British Cemetery.

He was awarded the British War Medal and Victory Medal.

The Blaydon Courier 04/06/1921 carries an obituary:
"In loving memory of my dear husband, Pte. T.W. Parkin, who was killed in action June 1st 1918. Ever remembered by his loving wife and children."
