Haggerston, A., Pte., 1919
In Marfaux British Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of 90980 Private Alfred Haggerston, serving with the Durham Light Infantry who died 25/06/1918.

The Northern Echo 04/01/1919 contains the following notice:
"Official news has just been received that Pte. Alfred Haggerston, D.L.I., son of Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Haggerston, of Staincliffe, Batley, and formerly of Leadgate, died while a prisoner at Montjoie, on 28th June last. He was 19 years of age".

David Haggerston Walton has contributed the following:

Alfred was the son of Jesse Haggerston and Florence Williamar Ward of Consett Iron Company Cottages, Leadgate (1911 Census). Jesse was a coal miner. The family moved to Yorkshire and lived at 98 Halifax Road, Staincliffe, Batley, Yorks (CWGC reference 25 Jun 1918). Alfred has a Medal Card and an inscription on the Batley War Memorial alongside his brother Herbert Ward Haggerston.

Alfred Haggerston is named as Assistant Scout Master with the 1st Staincliffe Troop in the Scout First World War Roll of Honour.

Footnote: Colin Stevens contacted us to say that he had the British War Medal for Alfred Haggerston and would very much like to reunite it with his family. The family live in Canada and the medal was duly sent.
