LEADGATE

Howard, J., Pte., 1916
Joseph Howard was the son of John G. and Catherine Howard. He was born in Byker in 1889.

In 1911 the family were at Greencroft Terrace Annfield Plain having been in previous census years at Consett 1891 and Leadgate 1901. In 1911 William (25) Joseph (22) and Thompson (16) were like their father Coal Miners.

In 1914 Joseph enlisted at Consett into the 2nd D.L.I with service number 21316. He went to France 24th August 1915. Joseph died of wounds aged 28 years on the 5th October 1916 and is buried at Etaples.

The Blaydon Courier 09/10/1920 includes this In Memoriam:-
In loving memory of Pte. Joseph Howard the beloved son of John and Catherine Howard, also their daughter Hannah E. Howard who died 18th December 1918. Ever remembered by their father and mother. Gone but not forgotten.
