In Kranji War Cemetery, Singapore, is the Commonwealth War Grave of 1771067 Gunner Nathaniel Thornton serving with the 7 Coast Regiment Royal Artillery who died 09/04/1945.

Nathaniel Thornton, born in the Lanchester District in 1920, was the son of Nathan, born 1879 and Mary Ann, nee Finnigan, born 1881. He had a number of siblings: Margaret 1904, Elizabeth 1905, Edith 1908, John 1910, Thomas 1913, Mary 1915 and William 1917.

Nathaniel's father Nathan died in 1934. In September 1939, Nathaniel's mother, Mary Ann, was living at 3, Cecil Crescent, Lanchester. She was a cleaner in a Bank. Living with her were Edith, Elizabeth (married name Johnson) and Thomas was a Permanent Way Labourer for the LNER.

Nathaniel died in Saigon on April 9th 1945.

Mary Ann died in 1950 and was buried in Lanchester Kitswell Road Cemetery.
