McGeary, A., Pte., 1940
On the Dunkirk Memorial, Nord, France, is the name of 4457969 Private Anthony McGeary serving with the 1st Battalion The Tyneside Scottish Black Watch (Royal Highlanders) who died 20/05/1940.

Anthony or Tony McGeary, as he was known, the son of Edward and Elizabeth, nee Cattermole, was born in the Lanchester District in 1918. Edward and Elizabeth, both born 1897 had married in 1915. He had a number of siblings: Edward, born/died 1917, Francis, born/died 1920, Robert, born/died 1923 and John, born 1926 /died 1927 (the family were living at Thomas and William Street Blackhill and these four boys are buried in Benfieldside Cemetery), Catherine 1922, Doris 1928, Thomas 1932 and Mary 1934.

Edward McGeary, a 41-year-old labourer died at Winterton Hospital, Sedgefield in 1935 and was buried in Benfieldside Cemetery. Elizabeth married Henry McGovern later that year. The family moved to Devon Crescent, Moorside and were living there in September 1939.

Tony McGeary was posted missing May 29th and his death announced in July 1940.

Elizabeth McGovern lived at Manor Grange, Lanchester, died in 1970 and was buried in Lanchester Kitswell Road Cemetery.

Anthony McGeary is remembered at Lanchester on L62.01 L62.06 and L62.07 and at Castleside on C113.01 C113.02 and C113.07
