Luxmoore, M., 2nd Lieut., 1940

Wedding April 1940

At St. Valery-Sur-Somme Communal Cemetery, Somme, France, is the Commonwealth War Grave of 109494 2nd Lieutenant Michael Luxmoore serving with the 1st Searchlight Regiment Royal Artillery who died 30/05/1940.

Dorothy Hall has submitted the following:-

Michael Luxmoore, born 24th June 1918 in Newcastle upon Tyne was the son of Allan Aylmer, born 1880 and Lucy nee Lees, born 1879.

In September 1939, the Luxmoore family were at Burnhopeside Hall. Michael's father and brother Edmund were both solicitors. They had a number of servants.

In April 1940 Michael married, at the private chapel of Bromley College, Kent, Ann Lavender Lee-Warner of Dento House, Harleston, Norfolk and Wimpole Lodge, Cambridge. She was a Nursing Auxillary at an emergency hospital. A guard of honour was formed by Red Cross Nurses. Anne had taken her degree at Canterbury.

Michael died five weeks later in May 1940 and the inscriptions "Greater Love Hath No Man" - "Tribute Was Paid to His Courage by German Captain" were added to his headstone.

Allan Luxmoore, was Clerk to the Brandon and Byshottles Urban District Council and later lived at Croxdale. He died in 1967. Lucy Luxmoore died in 1965. Anne Lavender Luxmoore married in 1942, Gordon Hugh Shingleton, was divorced in 1947 and died in 1950.
